Dark Souls 2: Scarlet of the First Sin is back online, but the original Dark Souls is permanently offline.

Two months after Dark Souls 3 servers were restored (open in new tab) and nine months after the entire Souls series servers went offline (open in new tab), Dark Souls 2: Scarlet of the First Sin (SOTFS) is back online. But so much for the good news.

The original version of DS2 runs on DX9 and doesn't have the extra elements and reconfigured encounters of SOTSF, so the servers will take a little longer to get back online. Fromm has stated only that DS2's basic online functionality will return online "at a later date," which is a terribly elastic time-space.

Still, it's better than the prophecy given to "Dark Souls:" (the original, pre-remastering version of DS1).

"We have determined that we cannot support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: DARK SOULS: PREPARE TO DIE EDITION, released in 2012. We have determined that we are unable to support the online service.

Not so surprising, since you can't even buy that version of the game (open in new tab) anymore, but a sad end for the original "Dark Souls," which just passed its 10th anniversary on PC. Indeed, the game was incredibly janky, barely playable with a keyboard and mouse. It has since been replaced by a remastered version, but one would hope that the game that ignited the Souls game fever on the PC would end more grandly and without much squealing. Furthermore, Prepare to Die Edition has more than twice as many mods as the remastered version (open in new tab), many of which focus on online play.

But that's not supposed to happen. Of course, Fromm still promises to restore the servers for Dark Souls Remastered. Nevertheless, judging by how long it took to fix DS2: SOTSF after restoring DS3, it will probably still be a serverless soul for a few more months until things get back to normal.
