Today's announcement of Studio Onoma's closure came as a real surprise. But amidst the disappointing news, there was a very faint and distant ray of light for "Deus Ex" fans: according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, work has begun on a new installment (opens in new tab) in the "Deus Ex" series.
Eidos Montreal, the developer of Deus Ex, was acquired by Embracer in August (opens in new tab), and according to them it is still intact, with some of Onoma's employees moving there. reportedly in development at Eidos, "Stranger Things-inspired" game has been canceled, but the studio is currently working on a "recently redeveloped" new game, has partnered with Xbox on games including a new "Fable" game, and is developing a new "Deus Ex" game in "very early stages."
The report comes months after Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb (via GamesRadar (opens in new tab)) said that Eidos Montreal "wants to get back into Deus Ex very soon." Square Enix has put the series on hiatus since 2016's "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," eventually selling it to Embracer Group along with "Tomb Raider" and the studio that produced them. However, Embracer has expressed interest in continuing the series (opens in new tab), and in September, Eidos Montreal "became the owner of the games it developed," including Deus Ex and Thief, which were owned by Square Enix before the Embracer acquisition The announcement (open in new tab) seems to have been somewhat consequential.
One person who apparently has no inside knowledge is actor Elias Toufexis, who voiced the main character Adam Jensen in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Somewhat ironically, given arguably the most famous line uttered by Jensen in the game (opens in new tab), Toufexis wants fans to stop asking him about it.
"They are (seemingly?) working on a new DeusEx. 'I don't know anything about it and I don't know if Adam Jensen is going to be part of it, so please don't ask me. I love the series and would love to play Jensen again. I have zero information!"
In a subsequent tweet, Toufexis clarified that he does not dislike the attention that each new mention of "Deus Ex" or Adam Jensen draws, "I just wish I had some answers." [At least as long as one of the answers is "Yes, they are definitely making a new 'Deus Ex'. I have contacted Eidos to see if this is really the case and will update when I hear back.
This was a very good teaser.
