Gaming is kinda cool right now. That's because even celebrities like Henry Cavill have been accused on talk shows of liking games (opens in new tab). Riot Games has been good at incorporating other media, like music, into its creations, and Minecraft entered the fashion world this year. Their new Burberry collaboration, however, is a bit lackluster.
I love the intersection of gaming and fashion. I'm not talking about mere T-shirts with logos, I'm talking about full-fledged collaborations between games and fashion. Whether it's incorporating a character into a design, making a logo look good, or creating clothing, bags, or shoes themed around the idea behind the game IP. This Minecraft x Burberry collection is just a logo on an expensive piece of clothing.
Here, a white T-shirt with Burberry written in blocks on a background of a creeper's face. Are you willing to pay £430 for this? (Open in new tab) I think not. How about this coat with the creeper's face and the BT logo? I think £2090 is fair" (opens in new tab). Hmmm.
There are some clever ideas hidden in this collaboration. My favorites are the Burberry scarf with the flower motif and the funny little square scarf with the Minecraft drawing on it. These are at least different from anything I have seen from this brand before. Otherwise, this luxury clothing line is just more of the same with a bigger price tag. If it's your kind of thing, buy it. I think it's perfectly fine clothing and those jogger pants look pretty comfortable. But for the same amount of money, you could buy an Xbox game pass for a few years, so I think you'd be better off spending it there.
Lacoste did a collaboration with Minecraft earlier this year, but at least that was a bit more colorful and fun. At least Burberry's collaboration isn't as inappropriate as Microsoft's normcore T-shirts (opens in new tab).
