General
Even at MSRP, the newly listed RTX 4080 16GB card is leaving some Nvidia fans cold.

The Nvidia RTX 4080 16GB graphics card was first listed on retailer Newegg ahead of its November 16 release.

The card is PNY's XLR8 Gaming Verto and is priced at $1,199.99 (opens in new tab). This is only 99 cents more than the MSRP announced by Nvidia. The site also lists another model, the PNY XLR8 Verto OC, but does not list a price next to this model. However, it would be more expensive for an overclocking card. [The RTX 4080 16GB uses the same Ada Lovelace architecture as the recently released RTX 4090, but the GPU is completely different. Instead of a scaled-down version of the higher-end chip, it has 9,728 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR6X memory, and a 320W TDP.

Compared to the GPU specs of the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, the difference in core specs between the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 is much greater: the difference in core count between the two Ampere GPUs is 20%; the difference in the new Ada Lovelace card is 68%.

Whether to spend significantly more on this card or deepen your pockets for the RTX 4090 (open in new tab) will have to be determined once you have one in hand to test, but it may impress you with its performance.

We expect to see more cards from Nvidia's partners ahead of the RTX 4080 16GB launch, most of which we expect to stick to their MSRPs. That said, some high-end cards will undoubtedly rise to the RTX 4090's MSRP of $1,599. Some high-end RTX 4090 GPUs were listed at $2,000 (open in new tab).

On launch day, the European price of the RTX 4080 16GB is expected to be even higher than the US price; according to a preliminary listing on LaptopsDirect (open in new tab) found by Videocardz (open in new tab), the price could be up to 1,490 pounds (originally reported as 1,590 pounds, but the list has now changed). However, these are not necessarily the prices we will see on launch day.

Scrolling through the Reddit thread (opens in new tab) on Newegg's list, many users on the Nvidia sub-Reddit have expressed concern about the price of the cards.

"At this point the 4090 makes sense price-wise; the 4080 does not," said user lilogsd.

One of the top comments, user Zintoatree, says: "If it is, I'm just trying to upsell to the 4090."

A Reddit thread (opens in new tab) about the LaptopsDirect listing is similarly filled with concerns about the price from European gamers.

If a four-figure price tag is too expensive for you, and I don't blame you for being financially wise, you'll have to wait a bit longer for cheaper next-generation cards; Nvidia was scheduled to launch in November for $899 for the RTX 4080 12GB (open in new tab), but cancelled it. The RTX 4080 is therefore the less expensive option of the two announced RTX 40 series cards. [Nvidia has not yet confirmed further RTX 40 series graphics cards. [However, AMD plans to announce several new cards soon. This week, the company will host a live stream (open in new tab) dedicated to RDNA 3 graphics cards, presumably starting with the enthusiast-grade GPUs pictured in these leaked images (open in new tab).
