Instead of the dark days of Tipper Gore and "special episodes" of Law & Order, gaming has gone mainstream. Still, one would expect that famous gamers in non-gaming fields would be into something more normal and familiar: Madden, CoD, WoW, etc.
According to a recent report in the New York Times (opens in new tab) (readers may encounter a paywall), some star members of the Philadelphia Eagles relax on a modified GTA Online role-playing server after work, They're into a little more funky gaming.
The players describe a common sight - finishing a 9-to-5 job and wanting to immerse themselves in literally everything else: the NYT reports that safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (open in new tab) and running back Kenneth Gainwell (open in new tab) open in a new tab) as the team's most dedicated gamers. Gardner-Johnson's streaming setup is estimated at $10,000.
The report doesn't go into much detail about what the Eagles' GTA sessions are like on average, but there is some interesting information. Gardner-Johnson mained a business owner and police officer on his server, and apparently running back Miles Sanderson's character was trapped in a clinger on the same server.
Honestly, it sounds like fun, and I'm a big fan of esoteric and nerdy; it reminds me of PC Gamer favorite Henry Cavill's obsession with PCs and tabletop gaming. I also take a little pride in seeing cool, successful people who share my interests. The Eagles are definitely doing something right too-they're currently 11-1 in the regular season.
