Coming in at $549, PSVR 2 will be the next generation console gamer's gateway to high-end VR parties (opens in new tab). Welcome to the party, my friends. But despite the VR headset's tasty specs, Sony's initial projection of 2 million units sold seems to have fallen far short of the 2 million units sold since pre-orders began.
Pre-orders for the PSVR2 (open in new tab) began a few months later, in December, on a special invite-only basis. Since then, Sony seems to have seen a pretty drastic drop in expected sales due to low pre-order numbers.
This is according to unnamed sources familiar with the company, who told Bloomberg (opens in new tab) about PlayStation 5 owners' disappointment with the slow adoption of the upcoming high-end VR.
According to the sources, not only has Sony warned its display panel partners to expect a drop in orders, but the company now expects to sell nearly 1.5 million PSVR 2 units between this April and next March. This is a slight drop from the forecast of 2 million units on standby for launch.
Apparently, the 2.4% spike in the stock price that Bloomberg covered (open in new tab) when PSVR 2 was first announced was when that 2 million unit sales forecast surfaced, and not when demand for high-end VR for consoles surged.
Of course, these numbers could well change after PSVR 2 launches on February 22 and the first reviews come out; PSVR is always a tipping point for adoption, so let's hope it doesn't disappoint. When it does, we PC gamers will finally be able to talk to our console-owning friends.
