In the middle of a desert wasteland stands the last great tree, Gaia. You are a strange lumpy spirit that walks around with strange tentacles and wears a strange little hat, or not. Your job is to plant other little trees. It is a very aggressive tree, and you protect the last tree itself from the hordes of attacking humans who only want to finish the job of turning the entire world into a desert.

"From Ashes, Bloom" is available for free on Steam and is a pretty good price for a video game.

"From Ashes, Bloom" has a rather nice cel-shaded art style that suits the procedurally generated blob characters well, and serves as an invincible juggernaut that mows people down in the classic style of action tower defense. Depending on the skin and starting setup, the trees will slow the humans down or do most of the work.

The game has a pretty good upgrade factor: you can buy tree types between rounds, get new weapons, earn bonus income for perfecting a wave of attacks, or add mobile tentacles to your blob guy so he can move even faster.

I don't know how many different builds there are in this game, but there are at least half a dozen different types of trees to plant (read: towers) and characters to play as, so there is at least that. Also, it was still a free hour of fun, which is pretty good in my book.From Ashes, Bloom is available on Steam.
