First reported by GamesRadar, an industrious modder named emoose has finally broken the 60fps barrier for Dark Souls 2 with his DS2 Frame Unlimiter project.
From Software, a studio that specializes in precise and intense action gameplay, has always had a rocky relationship with frame rates. Armored Core 6 was the studio's first high fps game, while most of its work prior to Dark Souls 3 was locked to 30 fps. Certain aspects of speed and functionality were tied to the frame rate, and as the speed increased, so did various glitches. In Dark Souls 2, these included:
The first glitch is particularly frustrating with the fragile weapons in Dark Souls 2. Emoose's project addresses these known game speed issues and allows Dark Souls 2's inherent limitations Dark Souls 2's inherent limitations. The mod is still in beta, and the biggest caveat is that online play is currently disabled due to concerns about its impact on multiplayer.
I shudder to think what insane things DS2 thirdukers are still doing in PvP after all these years. The DS2 frame unlimiter may become a must download item for me in the future, especially as emoose continues to work out the glitches. [The lead on that project was co-director of "The Elden Ring," and there's plenty of DS2 DNA in FromSoft's most successful game to date. PCG contributor Sam Greer wrote an excellent tribute and defense of the game last year, and Lincoln Carpenter covered "Dark Souls 2's" biggest fans in 2022, about this Soulsborn black sheep's appeal.
