I watch my storage space like a hawk and follow a strict rule that if a new game over 100GB is added to my system, I delete the equivalent game to make room and keep my PC in a zen-like state of equilibrium. But there doesn't seem to be much to worry about with Tribes 3: Rivals. That's because the system requirements for the early access version have been revealed, and only a relatively small 10GB is required for the precious storage.
According to the Early Access announcement on Steam's community news page, not only is the storage requirement for the machine light, but the other specs seem quite reasonable as well. [The CPU requires an Intel Core i5 4690 and an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, but there is no mention so far of what settings and frame rates these minimum spec components can achieve.
If you are concerned about the performance of older GPUs and are looking for an inexpensive upgrade, something like a Radeon RX 7600 or RTX 4060 would greatly exceed the minimum required specs.
Looking at the Early Access Trailer, it does not appear that Tribes 3: Rivals is pushing the limits of graphical fidelity. It certainly looks good, but in a fast-paced, competitive multiplayer game like this one, you want to keep the frame rate as high as possible. Therefore, the relatively low minimum requirements and undemanding graphics will be a boon for those still using older systems.
Other surprises include a minimum of 8 GB of RAM and only 12 GB recommended. Given the current low prices of DDR4 and DDR5, it is hard to say how many people are using 8GB or 12GB machines, but those using the more common 16GB should have no problem.
Recommended graphics cards are RTX 2080 or Radeon RX 6700, which are still the fastest GPUs out there, but hopefully you can achieve high settings and high frame rates from these still decent performance level components.
For recommended CPUs, the Intel Core i7 11700 and AMD Ryzen 5 5600 are hardly slow and still great performing gaming chips, but still not top tier requirements.
Looking at these specs, it seems that Tribes 3: Rivals is aiming to attract a large number of players to compete by making it playable on a wide range of machines.
I've always been the type of person who likes Unreal Tournament, but sometimes I would get ripped apart in a Tribes match. It's good for my self-esteem to be absolutely dominated by an opponent who has cat-like reflexes and can swoop by at unbelievable speeds. [Tribes 3: Rivals will be available in Early Access on March 12, so those with systems that are not up to spec will have time to upgrade.
