Almost exactly one month ago, I delivered a small PSA reminding those with remaining Amazon Prime subscriptions that they could get a free GOG copy of Fallout 1, clearly the objectively best Fallout game. Once again, I'm here to remind those with Amazon Prime subscriptions that they can get a free GOG copy of Fallout 2, which is clearly the third objectively best Fallout game. Please do so.
I know this will be disputed as my ranking, but I stand by it; Fallout 1's isometric, moody pulp and relatively tight, focused plot made it my favorite game in the series, but New Vegas is a close second. Honestly, I think I like the first Fallout slightly more because of the isometric engine, which allowed for a more evocative art style.
Anyway! There are a lot of people who say Fallout 2 is the best, but I didn't really get into its style and humor; Fallout 1 had its fair share of comedy and absurdity, but Fallout 2 upped the ante and took silly pop-culture references were crammed in wherever they wanted, and the attitude toward sex was somewhat adolescent (you could become a porn star, for example, and there were even perks that made you good at sex). I don't think it's bad, and I like it better than Bethesda's game.
But whatever my feelings, Fallout 2 is undeniably a worthy entry in the pantheon of great RPGs, full of a great RPG system, choice consequences, and all the good things you'd expect from a game with the Black Isle logo on the box.
If you're a Prime subscriber, you can go to Twitch's Prime Gaming page to get PUBG, Battlefield, and other little things for the live service. Honestly, you're probably looking at Fallout.
