Worried that you might have offended someone at an event, it turns out that it was actually because the venue (and perhaps you) stunk and you couldn't stand it anymore. This happened at a recent Yu-Gi-Oh event in Japan and was spread on Twitter after one player revealed that he couldn't stand being in such an irritating environment.

As ComicBook reported, it all started when one of the Japanese players at the event tweeted about her interaction with a woman who was also competing. According to machine translation, she revealed that it was her first time attending the event, but she soon left.

Turns out that was not the case. The woman revealed on Twitter that she left because of the stench in the card store, which had nothing to do with losing or interacting with other players. She tweeted, "I couldn't stand the smell and left halfway through." I wasn't defeated or sad."

A little awkward. When someone responded that it was "funny," she replied, "It stunk so bad it wasn't funny." When another user said, "No wonder there aren't more female duelists," she responded, "There are smelly female duelists, but men are different."

This stinky claim was echoed by the original tweeter, who quickly came to her defense. 'I bathe every day,' he tweeted, 'so I think I'm fine." It is a prejudice that people who play Yu-Gi-Oh are smelly [...]. In the past, the smell was a problem, so we took measures such as installing commercial air purifiers. Since then, I have heard that the smell has improved, so I think we have achieved certain results."

Continuing his rebuttal, he said, "The testimonies of those who say it smells also seem to have nothing to do with the official Yu-Gi-Oh card game. I think it is just a fad. The smell is not noticeable in an actual card store, so I think it's okay."

Now listen to me. I worked in a used video game and electronics store for years. I have attended many gaming events, trade shows, and conventions. I have been exposed to the horrible gamer stench that many of you will know. And, as many of the replies to the original tweeter's defense point out, it can be completely unnoticeable to those who are actively stewing.

Would it be a broad generalization to say that all gamers in a particular TCG or video game community stink? Absolutely. As someone who has had similar experiences in the past, I completely agree.

While unfortunate for both the perpetrator, Pongy, and the woman who had to leave the event because it was so bad, I can't help but chuckle a bit about this. It appears that this event was not a competitive tournament, just a casual event, so no money or winning potential was lost. Next time I go to a store or tournament venue, I'll smell their armpits.
