The launch of Copilot+AI PCs is now possible thanks to the performance of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series processor family. However, if you focus on the performance of NPU and AI, Qualcomm does harm. Sure, we really need to get the device on hand to judge the level of competitiveness, but the early signs look good, and Intel and AMD say that their new PC
performance is not at all, and the class-leading NPU and AI performance is screaming at the top of up to 45, but the platform is not the best. The long battery life of the system is a major factor that all major laptop manufacturers board the Snapdragon X Series train. Qualcomm is touting the new non-x86 chip as "pc reborn," which is certainly also called the 6/2 Computex keynote.
According to Gartner, the top 6 laptop manufacturers in the world are Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, Asus and Acer in that order. While you can clearly rule out Apple, it tells me that the other 5 are all planning laptops with Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus processors.
That's what they can like about the platform to jump into its first-generation new non-x86 Windows platform. And with Computex a few days ahead, we can expect to see more models and an extensive showcase of the platform's pros and cons.
Let's go over some of the models announced today in alphabetical order, starting with the Acer Swift14AI. You can choose from a Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite processor, up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB Gen4SSD, and a 75Wh battery, and Acer claims to be 2% more efficient than the Apple M30MAX. It comes with a 14.5-inch 2560x1600 120Hz IPS touch screen, WiFi7, and weighs only 1.36KG. Its price starts atま1,099.
If you like models with OLED screens, it's worth checking out the Asus Vivobook S15. It also comes with the option of a Snapdragon X Elite X1E78 100 or Snapdragon X Plus X1P64 100 processor, with 12-core and 10-core chips, respectively. This includes one of Asus' typically beautiful 120x100oled screens, with a refresh rate of 3Hz and a 2880% DCI-P1620 color gamut. It comes with a 70Wh battery, a WiFi7, up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB SSD.
IT WEIGHS 1.42 KG. It also comes with a pair of Type-C USB4 ports. I couldn't see the price of this model, but given the specs and the fact that premium Asus models are usually on the expensive side, I think this is cheap
Perhaps the biggest surprise coming from the first wave of this announcement is that Dell is set to release several Snapdragon X-powered models. The infamous Intel-friendly Dell is not only releasing the Inspiron and Latitude models, but also preparing a high-spec XPS variant. Even AMD has not found its way to the XPS unit, despite having a competitive laptop chip for several years.
The Dell XPS13 with Snapdragon should be built with the Intel version, which is similar in specifications and is highly appreciated. This will have to deal with the main disadvantages of the latter - stellar battery life and occasional thermal throttling under heavy loads.
Expect all the other XPS goodies, including an OLED touchscreen, a luxurious finish, and an option with a good quality keyboard and touchpad. It's the kind of unit I'd be happy to own, but like most premium XPS models, it's not cheap, starting at cheap1,299.
Dell is working on 3 other Snapdragon x models: the Inspiron14 model and the Latitude7455. The price and release date of the model have not yet been announced.
Next is HP. We're excited to announce OmniBook X AI and EliteBook Ultra AI. Omnibook X starts atま1,299 and ships after 6/18. This includes the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite, which comes with a 16GB LPDDR5X and a 1TB SSD. With these new Copilot+ laptops, it tends to be thin and light, and the OmniBook X weighs 1.35KG. Other key specifications include support for WiFi7, 2240x1400IPS touch screen, and USB4. EliteBook is a more business-oriented solution, and its main specifications seem to be very similar to OmniBook, but it starts with a hefty fty1,699. This includes some security options that are generally not required by the consumer unit.
Lenovo Yoga Slim7x will appeal to me personally. It will be launched on June 1, 199 starting from June6. At just 1.28KG, it features a 1000" X 100oled touchscreen with HDR3 and 14.5% P2944 and 1840 sRGB coverage, so it's very likely to be the luxurious and very portable laptop I want to use. Up to 32GB of LPDDR5X and 1TB SSD will be available.
This is a 2242 size drive, not the more common 2280 drive. If you add 3 Type-C USB4 ports to it, WiFi7, this certainly looks attractive.
It will join the ThinkPad T14S Gen6, priced fromド2,699.
Curiously, it comes with an inferior screen and a smaller 58Wh battery, but as a business laptop, it comes with an extended set of security features.
As co-pilot + ecosystem driver, it is not surprising that Microsoft has come out with a new surface line-up.
The Surface Pro is a 2-in-1 option, starting atド999, but the more expensive option will soon be added to its entry price. At just 895 grams, it does not get much portability than that. Still, it can carry up to 32GB of LPDDR5X, 1TB SSD, WiFi7, USB4, and Thunderbolt4. It sounds like a "tablet" like me.
There are 2 screen options, both of which appear to be broadly similar, except that they are oled screens and LCD. Both are 13 inches, with a resolution of 2880x1920 and a refresh rate of 120Hz.
The Surface Laptop starts atシ1,299 and comes with 13.8-inch and 15-inch options, which are slightly larger. It's a bit heavier than the Surface Pro as you'd expect, but it has a larger battery, so it has a longer lifespan. Microsoft claims up to 22 hours of video playback. Not bad at all. The new Samsung Galaxy Book4 has several flavors starting at few3.8 and 3.4GHz, with either trim and 12-core Snapdragon X Elite at 1,350 Ghz. You can also choose 14 inch or 16 inch touch SCREEN 3K AMOLED2X panel. This means a resolution of 2880x1800.
The memory option appears to be considerably lighter compared to other machines announced this week, with a 16GB LPDDR5X available, 512GB of storage being chosen in the 14-inch model and a 512GB or 1TB Ssd being chosen in the 16-inch model.
A 55.9Wh battery is advertised for up to 18 hours of battery life for smaller machines, or a 61.8wh battery provides up to 22 hours for 16-inch machines.
The 2 Galaxy Book4Edge machines are also fairly lightweight, with a 14-inch case weighing just 1.19 kg and a 16-inch case weighing 1.54 kg. Samsung also really wants a pre-order, as it offers an early discount of3380 and a 50-inch 4K TV at a bargain price.
However, I would recommend it for pre-orders until some independent testing comes out to see if the hardware is actually good. We're excited about the Snapdragon chip, but we're still wary of how well it will work with native x86 apps under emulation, and we're still cautious about whether it can really replace Intel or AMD's Windows devices.
