For decades now, FPS developers have pulled out all the stops to get us to play their thrilling new objective mode. Then again, for decades they have heard our reply: cool, cool, but what about TDM?
Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter XDefiant is the latest to be forced to include boring old-school team deathmatches. [XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin said in an interview with IGN on Sunday, "For two and a half weeks, the one thing players have been asking for is a TDM mode. So we'll see that in two weeks."
I enjoy XDefiant and was just thinking the other day that I wish there was a team deathmatch. The casual playlists currently available are all in objective mode: an escort mode like Team Fortress and a variation on point capture. But you can't just finish a round with a bunch of kills, get a bunch of objective points, and think, "Oh, what a great performance that was." I'm not against the objective mode, but let's be real: I want the number of kills, not the number of point C back caps. More details on Season 1 will be released on July 1.
Capture the Flag is fascinating: after TDM, it may be the mode I play the most in shooters.
I never thought I'd get into XDefiant at all, but I actually enjoy the casual mode and the non-SBMM lifestyle; I've been skeptical that critics of SBMM are really on to something when they claim that it's more fun to play against people of different skill levels. I was skeptical whether they were.
I wish it were on Steam, but unfortunately XDefiant is only available on the Ubisoft store.
