As we approach the release of Starfield's upcoming story expansion, Shattered Space, players are starting to wonder what's coming next. But instead of opting for regular updates, Todd Howard made sure that not only is another DLC planned after the Shattered Space, but that expansion could occur every year.
In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, in response to a question about whether players can expect a new story expansion every year, Howard said: "I will say more or less, how long it will last" hopefully, a very long time. But we are already planning for one after this [shattered space], so there will be another.
This is great news for anyone who felt that Starfield had not yet answered the burning question. Shattered Space seems to shed light on House Va'ruun cult, one of the more mysterious factions, but there's still something to be discovered.1 Everyone seems to have their own niche questions that they've stuck to since playing. "Finding the center of the multiverse and never seeing intelligent aliens may be strange for the DLC, and future humans will also block it" and if so, why do they allow the whole unity thing to run like the Lord of the flies, or at least very Darwinian? ?"
As for all the mysteries and questions that exist in Starfield, there's definitely plenty of canon fodder for future storyline, but answering all of them isn't a massive priority. "I don't know that our goal is to answer all the questions," Howard says. "We don't like to look at things like, say, hi, what angle do you want to add to the game such as experience or tone?""
Howard also revealed that the development of Shattered Space has been in progress for almost 10 months, as it began shortly after Bethesda finished work on Starfield's base game. "We do a lot of things," Howard says. "But the shattered space is what we were planning. And one of the things we always like about it from the beginning is that its shattered space, a large part of its expansion pack, is that once you get to the city and the planet, it takes place there. It allows us to build a landscape that we traditionally do.
Relatively, Howard says the expansion is similar to Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC content. "This is the scope that works for our development and is doing this kind of annual story expansion."" So we're really excited about it, and it really allows us to do something the same in previous games."
Toward the end of the interview, Howard also addressed the community's backlash against Starfield's77 mission, saying, "Listen to feedback," and in the future, "let's see how we deliver that and that kind of content." Given how many players are angry at it, it's a pretty nifty reaction, but future course changes are still better than nothing.
