The Splitgate studio is teasing something new.

Two years after announcing the end of updates to its “Halo with Portal” shooter Splitgate, developer 1047 Games is teasing something new.

Splitgate is a free-to-play arena shooter, and in addition to the usual video game firepower, every player in the game also has a portal gun that functions just like Portal's. Released in 2019 and with over 100,000 Steam positive reviews and was widely praised, but in September 2022, developer 1047 Games announced that it was time to move on to new things.

Not entirely new, though. The plan was to create a new game in the Splitgate universe, built on Unreal Engine 5, and it seemed intended to go beyond the perceived boundaries of the debut title: 1047 Games founder Ian Proulx said at the time that the studio was “trying to be 'Halo meets We don't want it to be 'Halo meets Portal,'” he said at the time, adding that the developers ”want to create something that is uniquely their own. Give us a blank slate and let us show you what we can do.”

The team seems ready to do just that. A message posted earlier today on Splitgate's Twitter feed shows an animated Splitgate-esque armor helmet and the words, “In 3 days... You're mine.”

Meanwhile, Splitgate's website has a countdown set to zero at 9 a.m. ET on July 18 (if my math is correct).

It is reasonable to assume that Splitgate 2, or a more cleverly named sequel, is on the way, but at this point 1047 has not revealed (or even announced) anything more than that. Whatever the case, the response on Twitter and Reddit has been enthusiastically positive, to say the least: it's clear that people are eagerly awaiting further news on Splitgate. I reached out to the studio to see if they had anything more to share, but it's probably unlikely.
