If you're wondering why the closed beta for the seventh patch of Baldur's Gate 3 has been delayed, picture this: you sat down to play D&D with your buddies. You sit down to play D&D with your buddies, excited to play with the new homebrew content that DM has planned. You attempted to do a Wisdom (Perception) check to see if there was anything suspicious in the room, but the DM, unprompted, reached across the table, grabbed your dice, and threw them out the window.
Larian Studios revealed on Twitter that this is basically what is happening under the hood in Baldur's Gate 3 right now.
“Patch 7 closed beta has been postponed. Passive dice literally stopped working. We're still trying to figure out why this happened. “
In the meantime, the scheduled closed beta will be postponed until later this week.”
This, as you can imagine, is a problem - especially when it comes to Perception skills, Baldur's Gate 3 actually diverges from the tabletop system: in D&D 5th edition (the ruleset BG3 is based on), characters have “passive Perception” have, usually 10 + skill modifier. Because it is a video game, “Baldur's Gate 3” allows dice to be rolled under the hood under normal circumstances. Patch 7 does not appear to be a normal situation.
As penance, Larian posted a preview of the patch notes on Steam instead: an honest Mystra set of mod tools.
Split-screen gameplay will also be revamped: “When playing in split-screen, the two halves of the screen will dynamically merge when the player characters approach each other in game, and dynamically split when the characters move apart. This revamp, along with many other improvements and refinements, will improve the overall experience of split-screen play.
Larian also shares some other tweaks to Honour Mode. For example, Dror Razglin will now be able to mind control spiders if he is thrown into the Thunderdome with them, which is terrifying. In addition, several Gith enemies have added legendary action, which can be used to end the run. Good thing I earned my golden dice.
There are also gameplay fixes, UI improvements, text tweaks (including a late-game adjustment that makes the companions “more sympathetic to Astarion fleeing the sun”), and performance tweaks. These are just the highlights of the patch, which is far from over, but you can read the in-progress notes below.
Don't forget that patch 7 will only be available in closed beta on Steam for the time being, and will be available to all players in September.
