The latest title from game development collective Sokpop is a $3 real-time strategy game with a neat concept: an Age of Empires-style RTS boiled down to the basics. It's a micro RTS where you have to quickly think through a detailed economic strategy while reacting to your opponents' strategies. The objective of the game is simple: kill the enemy's king units before they kill yours.
King Pins has a cute and fun campaign lasting about an hour that introduces the game concept and unlocks the game's four factions: goblins, humans, elves, and the creepy undead devils. You can then play local scheme matches with the AI on several difficulty levels or with up to four human players. It's an RTS that you can play from the comfort of your couch, and it's great, to say the least, like Age of Empires, a game where you take your time carefully producing units and building, and perfecting your combination of attacking units at just the right time. Unlike Age of Empires games, Kingpins has no Fog of War to catch your opponent off guard.
Sokpop Collective is a Utrecht-based four-person game development crew known for producing two small games each month through its Patreon program, which is funded by just over 1,500 people. Earlier this year, they hit the two-year mark of making two games each month.
You can find King Pins on itch.io for now, but like their other games, it will be on Steam sooner or later. It would be great to have remote play together for this game!
