After a short Early Access run, Flying Oak Games, the developer of ScourgeBringer, has come to one firm conclusion.
When it first appeared in February, ScourgeBringer seemed like a game made specifically for the part of my brain that spent 300 hours on Nuclear Throne dailies. This room-capturing roguelike combines the high-stakes platforming of Celeste with Dead Cells-style hacking and slashing and the screen-shattering impact of Vlambeer pulled straight out of the playbook, and secretly, over the past year It may have been my favorite action game of all time.
It wasn't half as bloody hard, and the developers seem to have upped the ante with today's 1.0 release.
ScourgeBringer's launch update introduced the "chaos route". Want to do more damage with traps, too much HP? How about getting hurt every second you spend on the floor? Feel free to create your own misery. Of course, like the heat score in "Hades," you'll look slick as hell if you play the game after you've cranked this number up to the hilt.
Granted, the "Chaos Route" can only be unlocked after you have beaten the game at least once. For the rest of us, the developers promise that the first region should be a bit more forgiving. Today's launch will also add a new secret realm with bosses, as well as new monsters, weapons, items, and blessings.
Hard mode or not, ScourgeBringer is a great little thing. Each room blurs as you try to juggle crowded enemies as murderous aerial balls of hair, blades, and bullets.
ScourgeBringer is available now on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store for $14.44 / €14.44 / £11.46. Hopefully, there is a great gourmet pizza recipe hidden in the game's EULA.
