After all this time, I finally figured out what Rocksteady was working on. It is not a Superman game. In fact, just the opposite, Arkham Studios is currently developing a somewhat less heroic Suicide Squad game, it was announced on Twitter.
"Target locked - #DCFanDome - August 22. #suicidesquadgame," the Rocksteady account tweeted. This DC FanDome is an online event that DC Comics is hosting on August 22, and it seems that Rocksteady is ready to announce their next game.
The attached image shows a target on the back of Superman's head, suggesting that the game will hunt Superman as a supervillain team, the Suicide Squad. In this game, Superman will be hunted as the supervillain team "Suicide Squad."
But since it is a slightly odd, purple Superman, maybe it is not really Supes at all, but a corrupted version, or his evil doppelganger Bizarro.
Rumors have been flying around for years about Rocksteady's next game, but actual details have been elusive. The studio's last game was 2016's Arkham VR, but its last full-fledged title was Arkham Knight, released the year before. Rumors of Superman appeared shortly thereafter and were finally quashed two years ago by Rocksteady game director and co-founder Sefton Hill. Shortly before that, the studio began hiring for its "highly anticipated AAA game." [Last year, we predicted that Rocksteady's latest game might be a "live service" game like Destiny 2 or Fortnite. Since Suicide Squad is a team, it makes sense to focus on multiplayer, but I personally expect something like the "Arkham" games. Meanwhile, a few months ago, concept art of Superman appeared in the portfolio of a WB Games contractor. Was this for a "Suicide Squad" game, or perhaps a Superman game that may have once been in the works?
More on Rocksteady's "Suicide Squad" will be revealed at DC's 24-hour virtual event, FanDome, on August 22. It's been a long, long road, but it's almost here.
