The prize pool for "Age of Empires 2" is the largest since 2002.

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition's Hidden Cup 3 takes place this weekend, boasting the highest prize pool for an Age of Empires 2 esports event in the past 18 years.

The tournament can be watched on Twitch and the competition has already begun. The event will run until March 22, at which point the 2020 Hidden Cup 3 champion will be crowned.

This year's tournament has a little added spice. Players' handles have been changed to Age of Empires stock names, so that you can't tell who you are watching unless you guess from their playstyle.

This extends to casters as well, who also do not always know who is playing. As a result, the commentary is relatively unbiased and does not compare new players to Age of Empires veterans based on reputation alone at all. It all comes down to raw play.

On Reddit, one fan noted that because the event was played on Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, which introduced four new civilizations, even players with nearly 20 years of experience only had a few months to catch up to the current build, an important detail, he pointed out. In many ways, this year's Hidden Cup 3 marks another step forward for this iconic RTS.

The semi-finals and grand finals of Hidden Cup 3 will take place on Sunday, March 22. If you don't want to miss that action, stay tuned to the official T90 Twitter feed throughout the weekend.
