Epic's free game streak continues today with GoNNER and Offworld Trading Company, GoNNER is a procedurally generated roguelike platformer and Offworld Trading Company is a Mars-based economic RTS.
Offworld Trading Company is my favorite, albeit a dirty one. It's an unconventional RTS, where battles are fought in the marketplace and companies try to take each other's lucrative planets. Even without an army, it's fast-paced, competitive, and watching the market fluctuate is almost as exciting as watching armies clash. Yes, it's almost as exciting; AI is good, but made even better by sneaky human opponents.
I'll leave it to Phil Savage's GoNNER review to avoid torturing myself with roguelike platformers.
Despite GoNNER's difficulty, aesthetic, and mystery, it's no big deal. It doesn't take long to figure out enemy patterns, and there is little variation in level generation. Loadouts provide tactical planning, but the equipment is neither as varied nor as important as in, say, Nuclear Throne; GoNNER doesn't last as long as the best roguelike shooters, but it's still a stylish, strange, and interesting action platformer It is.
Both are free until March 12 at 3 p.m. (7 a.m. GMT/PT), after which they will be replaced by three new games: Anodyne 2, A Short Hike, and Mutazione.
