Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Outback Relief Pack has raised over US$1.6 million (A$2.38 million) in aid of those affected by the fires in Australia.

The pack includes a variety of Australian-themed cosmetics, including an adorable koala gun charm, emblems, calling cards, weapon skins, and of course hats. The pack existed as the "Outback Pack" prior to Activision's charitable efforts, but last month it was announced that net proceeds from sales through January 31, 2020 (including those sold prior to the announcement) of the newly named "Outback Relief Pack" would be donated.

In a new blog post, Activision explains how the donation will be used. It is working with Direct Relief, an international humanitarian organization, to ensure that "100% of the funds" will be used for relief efforts in Australia. Commenting on the initiative, Call of Duty General Manager and Vice President Byron Beed thanked players who purchased the packs

and said, "We are honored to be able to support this cause with the funds from the Outback Relief packs, and we are proud to be able to help the Australian government and the Australian community in need. We appreciate your generosity and look forward to putting this donation into action.

The fires, which began in June 2019 but reached critical levels in the New Year, have destroyed approximately 18.6 million hectares (72,000 square miles) of land and killed an estimated 34 people and 1 billion animals, including potentially leading to the extinction of several species.

It is worth noting that only the net proceeds of the Outback Relief Pack were donated, which means that Activision and Infinity Ward were on the hook for nothing; a donation of A$2.38 million is impressive, but one of the largest game publishers raises the question of why Activision could not donate all of the proceeds of one cosmetic packet.

Although the Outback Relief Pack fundraising drive has ended, donations can still be made to Australia Relief as the effects of the fires are still ongoing; WWF has its own Australia Appeal, and the Victoria Country Fire Authority), which lists ways to donate directly to WWF or WWF's fundraising organization.
