"The Sims" may turn 20 within the next week, but Maxis' series shows no signs of slowing down, according to EA's latest earnings report.
Among them, the company announced that the latest installment, "The Sims 4," released in 2014, has reached 20 million lifetime players across all platforms. This does not necessarily add up to total sales, as the game is included in EA's Origin Access subscription service on PC and EA Access on consoles, but it still shows the game's staying power.
The Sims 4 is the longest running title in Sims history and is approaching its sixth anniversary, compared to The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, which each had five years of post-launch support and four years for the first game. In an audio recording of EA's latest earnings call posted by the Sims Community, Wilson confirmed that Maxis continues to "think about a new generation of 'The Sims'" and cited recent advances in gaming such as cross-platform play and expanding neighborhoods with other players through the cloud and other recent advances in the game. He also mentions "The Sims Online," which was discontinued in 2008, and emphasizes "social interaction and competition" as an example of where the series is headed.
