Unveiled during today's DC Fandome live stream, Gotham Knights is WB Games Montreal's next title and stars four successors to Batman in a world where Batman is no longer around. Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood are Gotham's new heroes, who will team up to foil plans that seem to involve Batman's various villains.
Shortly after the above cinematics, WB also released a gameplay video of Batgirl and Robin facing off against Mr. Freeze. Unfortunately, he didn't say "cool it," but he may be holding back for later.
During gameplay, the viewpoint moves back and forth between the two characters, and the game can be played entirely in two-player co-op.
The cinematic trailer outlines the story: Batman is apparently dead, and now that he is gone, he has activated an emergency protocol that calls for his apprentices to protect the city. If you remember the ending of Batman: Arkham Knight, this is no surprise.
"If you are watching this, I am dead, this is Code Black," says the trailer's voiceover.
"This message was automatically triggered when I destroyed the cave and everything in it.
Now, Batman's successors will team up to figure out what is happening to the Bat and what is happening in Gotham. The story is said to be based on the popular "Court of Owls" comic book storyline, but according to the developers, that's not all.
In the trailer, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Robin, and Red Hood can be seen suiting up for battle. According to the developers, each has its own customizable fighting style. Nightwing appears to be acrobatic and stealthy. Batgirl fights like Batman, but uses a tonfa to take down enemies and kicks from an acrobatic wall run. Robin, especially Red Robin, who appears to be Tim Drake in a suit, seems acrobatic and quick as expected. Red Hood, on the other hand, seems to have a dangerous superpower commonly known as "gun-holding."
Gotham Nights will be released in 2021. Also, I'm calling it now: Batman is not actually dead and will be unlocked as playable near the end of New Game+.
