When does a roguelike become a puzzle game? When is a strategy game a roguelike? The answer is "Ending," one of the best roguelike-puzzle-strategy games released in the last few years. Ending" is a wonderful achievement, and as you can imagine, a surprising sequel has just been released called "Unending," which is both "Ending" and endless.

Instead of completing a series of levels to reach the end of the game, you endlessly explore an ASCII-like open world for as long as possible until you are killed or starve to death. The basic mechanics of the endings remain the same. In particular, the wonderful enemy mechanic that allows you to defeat the bad guys only from certain sides. Approaching an enemy from the wrong angle or being surrounded by enemies will likely result in a checkmate situation, forcing you to start the game over or undo your previous move.

As in the original game, the unending is quite strategic, but thanks to the larger map, it is generally a bit more flexible. But it is also simpler. Everything dies in one hit, and the only resource you have to worry about is food, which dwindles as you progress through the world; Unending is the perfect coffee break game, a perfect blend of puzzle and roguelike, and can be played in your browser here.
